How to Balance Your Radiators for Better Heating
Tackle cold spots and uneven heating with a simple, safe radiator balancing routine.
If some radiators in your home are roasting while others stay lukewarm, there is a good chance your system needs balancing. Radiator balancing is a straightforward job for many homeowners and can make a real difference to comfort and energy use when done correctly.
What radiator balancing actually means
Balancing is the process of adjusting how much hot water flows through each radiator so they all heat up at a similar rate. Instead of one or two radiators pinching most of the heat, balancing shares it more evenly around the system.
The key valve for balancing is the lockshield valve, usually found at one end of the radiator. You normally leave this valve alone once it is set, and it often has a small plastic cap. The other end is usually a TRV (thermostatic radiator valve) or a simple on/off wheel head that you use day to day.
In many West Yorkshire homes, especially Victorian terraces and 1930s semis, pipe runs can be long and twisted from years of changes. That makes correct balancing even more important so radiators furthest from the boiler still get enough heat.
Getting ready to balance your radiators
Before you start, it helps to work methodically. You will get the best results if you allow time for the system to respond to each change rather than rushing.
Gather a few basics so you are prepared:
Small adjustable spanner or lockshield key
Flathead screwdriver (if your valves need it)
Pen and paper or phone notes to track adjustments
Radiator bleed key and an old towel
If any lockshield valves look very old or corroded, especially common in older Bradford and West Yorkshire properties, approach with care. If they feel stuck, do not force them, as you could cause a leak.
Step-by-step guide to balancing radiators safely
1. Turn the heating on and open TRVs fully
Set your room thermostat to a higher temperature than normal so the boiler runs continuously for a while. Then go around the house and turn all TRVs or radiator valves fully open by turning them anti-clockwise.
This allows maximum flow to every radiator to start with. If any radiators are off or partly closed, balancing will not work properly and you will get misleading results.
2. Check radiators are bled and note which heat fastest
Once the heating has been running for 10 to 15 minutes, quickly check each radiator. Carefully feel the top: it should warm evenly from one end to the other. If the top is cool while the bottom is warm, there may be trapped air, so you will need to bleed it.
Bleed radiators one at a time using a radiator key, with a towel underneath. If water does not come out, or the radiator will not bleed properly, stop and contact a plumber. While you are checking, note which radiators heat up fastest and which are slow or lukewarm.
3. Start with the radiator closest to the boiler
The radiators closest to the boiler or on the shortest pipe runs usually get the most heat and will be roasting hot. In many terraces, this is often the hall or front room; in 1930s semis it may be the lounge or a downstairs front room.
On this first radiator, find the lockshield valve, usually under a small push-on cap. Gently remove the cap and use your spanner, key or screwdriver to turn the valve clockwise a small amount to start closing it. A quarter of a turn at a time is enough.
4. Work through the radiators in order
After adjusting the first radiator, move on to the next closest, then the next, gradually working towards the ones furthest from the boiler. The idea is that radiators near the boiler are more restricted, while those further away remain more open so they get their fair share of hot water.
With each radiator, close the lockshield in small increments. Write down roughly how much you have turned each valve so you can undo changes later if needed.
5. Wait between adjustments and re-check
Once you have adjusted several radiators, wait 15 to 20 minutes for the heating to settle. Then go around the house and feel each radiator again. You want them all to start warming within a similar timeframe and reach a steady, comfortable temperature.
If one room is still much hotter than the others, slightly close that radiator’s lockshield again. If a distant radiator is still slow or cool, try opening its lockshield a little more anti-clockwise. Always make small changes, then wait and re-check.
What a well balanced system feels like
In a properly balanced system, radiators warm up more evenly and rooms reach temperature around the same time. You should no longer have one or two rooms that are uncomfortably hot while others feel chilly.
You might also find your boiler cycles less and the house holds temperature more steadily. That can contribute to lower gas use, particularly in draughty older properties common across West Yorkshire.
Common balancing mistakes to avoid
A frequent issue is confusing the TRV with the lockshield valve. TRVs are for everyday temperature control; lockshields are for fine-tuning flow. Adjusting the wrong one will not give you lasting results.
Other problems to watch for include:
Turning lockshields too far in one go and starving a radiator of heat
Not allowing enough time between adjustments to see the effect
Forcing stiff or seized valves, which can cause leaks
Ignoring signs of sludge, such as radiators hot at the top but cold at the bottom
If a valve will not move with gentle pressure, or a radiator stays cold despite being bled and fully open, stop and speak to a heating professional.
When to call a plumber instead
Balancing is a good first step before looking at more involved work like powerflushing or pipework changes. It often sorts out cold spots, especially in systems that have been altered or extended over the years.
However, you should contact a plumber if you notice any of the following:
Radiators that will not bleed properly, brown or black water when bleeding, valves that are seized or badly corroded, or radiators that stay cold even after careful balancing. These are signs that professional cleaning or repairs may be needed.
